one 2 one
The WIRE staff regularly participated in One 2 One visits with members of the community. These can take place in people’s homes, in coffee shops, in the office, in schools or even just a quick chat in the street. This was an important aspect of our work and a great way of building relationships. In addition, it allows people a chance to receive support in a non-threatening and friendly way. Run by Spurgeons as separate work

parenting skills
These short courses are based on the Positive Parenting programme and offer support and advice in a relaxed and accessible environment. They cover various themes that are relevant to parenting and aimed to build confidence and communication skills in parents. The course has been adapted to be more relevant to specific groups and has been run for young parents, parents of teenagers, fathers, new mums, and the Portuguese community. We are also involved in the Webster Stratton training programme, delivering courses both daytime and evening to include working parents. Run by Spurgeons as separate work

contact sessions
The WIRE helped support families where  fathers are not resident with their children by giving opportunity for contact in low key supervised sessions. This has proved to be a much valued service to the community due to its non-judgmental approach. Run by Spurgeons as separate work

créche work
To help support parents on a daily basis, The WIRE alongside SureStart employed a team of trained, CRB-checked workers to look after pre-school children. Available most days, the crèche is run while parents attend groups, meetings and training. Run by Spurgeons as separate work

drugs awareness course
For anyone worried about their child taking drugs, or who needed some advice and information on substance misuse, this free course was invaluable. Designed for parents, professionals and accredited by the West Sussex Drugs Alcohol and Action Team (DAAT), this four-hour course includes videos, discussion and practical information to keep you up to date. Usually split over two morning sessions, the course is informal and suitable for all knowledge levels. Run by Spurgeons as separate work

teddytots
Teddytots was the longest running WIRE activity and is now in partnership with SureStart. As the name suggests it is a toddler group that welcomes mums, dads, carers, grandparents and child minders with their under five’s. The group aimed to create new friendships and support networks between the parents, as well as introducing parents to other activities run by The WIRE. The children also benefit from singing and playing as a group, learning to share toys and participating in new creative skills such as painting or craft. Run by Spurgeons as separate work

young parents
This weekly group was for anyone up to the age of 22 who has children or is expecting them soon! Run by WIRE staff and crèche workers, the young mums, their partners and their children never have a dull moment with toys, craft and play activities. The group offers friendship, support and practical advice to new parents, trips and meals out, plus as much tea and chocolate cake as they can handle! Run by Spurgeons as separate work
