what was the wire?
The WIRE was a voluntary organisation that
provided activities, support and advice for
children, young people and families in Littlehampton,
West Sussex. Started in 1996 as a direct result
of the social and economic problems in the
area, The WIRE quickly gained a reputation
as a creative and vibrant project that responded
to the real day-to-day needs of local residents
through action and support. The project also
worked closely alongside other agencies, and
had a national and international influence
as other areas sort to learn from its experiences
of positive community development.
The WIRE was part of Spurgeons, a children’s’
charity who provided the managerial, administrative
and financial backbone to The WIRE’s work.
Together with the locally formed UnderWIRE
Advisory Group, The WIRE gained long-term
stability and support to help strengthen the
foundations of the project.

every child matters
Every Child Matters: Change for Children (ECM)
is a new approach to the well-being of children
and young people from birth to age 19. The
Government's aim is for every child, whatever
their background or their circumstances, to
have the support they need to:
* Be healthy
* Stay safe
* Enjoy and achieve
* Make a positive contribution
* Achieve economic well-being
The WIRE was committed to achieving these
aims in its work, and therefore each activity
carries a symbol that corresponds to the ECM
targets it is helping to achieve. Together
we are making children’s lives better.
littlehampton
Situated between Bognor Regis and Worthing,
on the south coast of England is the small
town of Littlehampton. In the last 10 years
the area has received tremendous investment
from various agencies. This funding helped
The WIRE and other organisations tackle the
on-going issues of unemployment, substance
misuse, low literacy levels and low self-esteem.
The WIRE was based in two different locations.
In 1996 it was in a port-a-cabin on the car
park of the then Wickbourne Chapel. When the
new Wickbourne centre opened in 2005 half
the team moved from our temporary office that
became our permanent office at Flora McDonald
Junior School. |
